Established alongside the town in 1799 the town council has always been the driving force for public policy on the island. As the United States of America grew in power, the Magical Congress allowed the island it’s autonomy as long as an ambassador had a post on the island. Since then, the town council has been responsible for all major decisions on Darvey with additional town stewardship coming from the Headmaster of the Academy. Over the years a few rules were put in place to govern the council.
-Free and open elections will be held amongst the constituency of the island to determine council members.
-Elections are held yearly.
-Council members must be island residents at least 21 years of age.
-Council members are required to attend all meetings and public forums.
-Council members must attend all emergency call meetings.
-There are no term limits for council members.
-Although a stipend is paid, Town Council is not considered a full-time job. We encourage citizens of all backgrounds and occupations to run for council.
-No more than three faculty members of Salem Academy may serve on the council at one time.
-The Headmaster has the privilege of sitting in on all council-related business. The Headmaster also retains to privilege to vote, or not to vote, on any given topic.
-A call for candidates shall be made public well in advance of the election to give fair and proper time to any wizard or witch that wished to run.
